Welcome to Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is a national park located in Tanzania’s Manyara Region in  northern Tanzania The name of the park originates from the Tarangire River that crosses the park. The Tarangire River is the primary source of fresh water for wild animals in the Tarangire Ecosystem during the annual dry season.

The Ecosystem  in Tarangire is defined by migration of wildebeest and zebras which covers  a very long distance  During the dry season thousands of animals concentrate in Tarangire National Park from the surrounding wet-season dispersal and calving areas.

It covers an area of approximately 2,850 square kilometers (1,100 square miles.) The landscape is composed of granitic ridges, river valleys, and swamps. Vegetation is a mix of Acacia woodland, Combretum woodland, seasonally flooded grassland, and baobab trees.

The name of the park originates from the Tarangire River that crosses the park and covers an area of 2850 km 2.

Attractions and wildlife

The Park has remarkable attractions with large groups of Elephants, spectacular natural beauty of savanna landscape and magnificent majestic Baobabs. Over 550 different bird species have been recorded in the park, of which several are threatened or endemic. Tarangire is noted as a safari destination for its large concentration of wildlife population. Animals like elephants, eland, giraffe, lions, buffalo, cheetah, leopards and zebra are easily spotted when  during game drive with special vehicles

Climate

Tarangire has a bimodal rainfall with short rains starting from November to December, long rains from March to May and dry season from June to October and January to February.

The park is located at an altitude between 900 m and 1250 meters with annual average rainfall ranging from 650 to 700mm.

Transport

The Park can be accessed by road or air

By Road: The park is 121 km through a tarmac road from   Arusha city.

By Air: The park can be reached by flight from Kilimanjaro International Airport which is 46 km from Arusha. Chartered flights are also available from Arusha to Kuro Airstrip located inside the park.
